Gun chokes have been a part of American firearm history for many years. They were first developed in the late 1800s as an effective way to muzzleloader shooters. Gun chokes became popularized in the early 1900s with the development of shotguns, and eventually handguns. Today, gun chokes are still used extensively in firearms, both legal and illegal, across the United States. Many gunchoke variants are available, including those designed specifically for certain types of firearms or target shooting. The use of gun chokes began to spread rapidly through America during the early 1900s due to their effectiveness at limiting ammunition magazine capacity and stopping bullets from passing through a shotgun barrel. At that time, shotguns were the most common type of firearms in America and were used by most people. Shotgun barrels were relatively short so that they could not accommodate mucharger choke tubes (which would have increased the capacity of a shotgun) and this caused some shotgunners to develop creative ways to get around this limitation. One such method was to fit a larger choke tube into a shorter shotgun barrel by using an adapter/modification called a “hogger” . This modification allowed shotguns with longer barrels to be converted into rifles by adding another choke tube (usually smaller than calibers commonly used in pistols) at one end of the barrel where it connected directly to the rifle’s magazine well. This process was known as “rifle conversion” and was very popular amonggunowners during World War I because it allowed them to mount rifles on older Model 1873 shotguns which had no magazinewell provision whatsoever! Gun Choke History: Origins Asymmetric firearm designs proved particularly successful against single-shot breechloading artillery pieces like artillery howitzers while being less reliable against modern bolt-action breechloading infantry weapons like carbines or revolvers; however these efforts ultimately failed due mainly because guns unable or unwilling to chamber large rounds found other employment soon thereafter despite potential benefits. The first documented application of asymmetric handgun design is credited with being made by Captain George Armstrong Custer who mounted his revolver cartridge belt linker on top of his six-shooters holster on July 15th, 1876 near Fort Washakie Indian Reservation east side Omaha Nebraska. The success attributed thereto led Captain Armstrong himself[citation needed]to begin manufacturing similar devices for private citizens throughout North America although none reached any wide distribution until after he died suddenly unexplained riding off horseback while on assignment westward towards California in 1881.For more information please see: "Captain George Armstrong Custer - A Biography" by Alfred Eisenstat.See also: "1876: The Year Of Change In Firearms Technology" article at Wikipedia.

Ammunition producers responded quickly enough[*] Pumping out ample amounts of new high pressure cartridges realizing that too few bore sizes remained unrestricted as prior Norris–Brown legislation had left companies with nearly unlimited choice when choosing calibers[*] production resumed within five months following expiration ol Norris-Brown restrictions without new restrictions from Congress however small arms manufacturers did experience shortages lasting up until 1903 when Pratt & Whitney introduced its own high pressure gas system which solved all Reported Cartridge Shortages > Gun Choke Use By Law Enforcement Officers One important reason behind gun stocks having such limited ammo capacity is that law enforcement officers require more rounds per hour than average civilians do ((Langdon Research Institute)) In fact, law enforcement agencies may issue orders specifying maximum roundsPerHour they will allow each individual officer[*] ..... Magazines typically hold 8 rounds per pistol grip but can hold 25 rounds if carried mounted on duty belt.Law enforcement officials often carry multiple magazines with them at all times since they will frequently need additional firepower beyond what is provided inside their regular service weapon(s).
