The town of O'Fallon, Illinois is a small, sleepy village located in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 2,664 at the 2010 census. It lies just south of the Indiana state line and east of Springfield. O'Fallon was platted on December 1, 1819 by Nicholas Trimble and James H. Keesler. It was named after Colonel John O'Farrell (1768-1851), who served as military governor of Missouri from 1821 to 1825 and as sheriff of Genesee County from 1830 to 1835. The village site had been Choctaw Nation land until Indian Removal began in the 1840s. When the railroad arrived in 1852, business boomed; by 1860, it accounted for one-third of all economic activity in McLean County. In 1880, when a new post office opened in O'Fallon with its own mail service, local farmers petitioned Congress for federal assistance to build a road through their lands so that people could reach Chicago easier. Because no money was available from Congress to help them build the road - or even provide goods or services - they built it themselves using lumber brought overland by railroads and donated by citizens throughout the region. In 1865–66, Fenton Cady organized a grain elevator at present-day Farmington Hills across the river from O'Fallon; this became an important center for flour production in central Illinois during the early years of industrialization. By 1870, there were two newspapers published daily here: "The Patriot" (owned by John Hennessey) and "The Enterprise". A schoolhouse and garage were built about this time; today's grocery store/cafeteria complex is located near downtown O'Fallon on Main Street between First Avenue and State Street (just west of Interstate 70). During World War I (1914-18), General Motors produced munitions here; following Armistice negotiations on November 11th 1918 - days after General Pershing's death - GM transferred operations to Flint Michigan rather than return home where they would have been subject to German inspection restrictions. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945, much factory production ceased due to high costs associated with postwar reconstruction; however some plants did continue into 1946 when INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS BOARD established guidelines limiting wartime production within specific limits As a result of these constraints upon postwar industry growth many jobs were created only relatively recently such as thoseLMorganChrysler plant manager position which continued operations until May 1984

Frémont, explored and mapped much of what is now Illinois during his famous Expedition of 1837 which discovered parts of today's Missouri River Valley and Midwest United States. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Major General William Tecumseh Sherman to march through central Illinois to destroy any partisan activity he found while he was planning an invasion of Confederate states north of Mexico City. Sherman marched through O'Fallon on his way to Springfield, Missouri where he destroyed most of the town's infrastructure and killed many residents before withdrawing two months later without achieving his objectives. Aftermath: In 1865 Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Major General William Tecumseh Sherman to march through central Illinois to destroy any partisan activity he found while he was planning an invasion of Confederate states north of Mexico City - but instead Sherman burned most of the town's infrastructure and killed many residents before withdrawing two months later without achieving his objectives (see history lesson).
