O'Fallon, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois that was founded in 1834. It is the only village in Cook County and was once the county seat of Kane. The population of O'Fallon was 24,811 as of the 2010 census. O'Fallon's ZIP code is 62701. The name "O'Fallon" comes from John Older'sIrish name 'O Failín,' meaning 'the place where trees grow.' The first settler in what is now O'Fallon Township were Moses and Hannah Elder, who arrived on November 2, 1834 from Kingston, Ulster County, Ireland with their six children. The family named their land for General James Hurlbut (1785-1861), an officer during the War of 1812 who had been commissioned a Colonel by President James K. Polk. In 1835 Michael Hogan settled on a farm west of present day Midway Road and called it Arlington Heights which became thenickname for what is now downtown O’ Fallon. In 1856 Samuel Cousins bought some property east of Midway Road and renamed it East Aurora after his brother Elijah Ayer McMahon (1824-1902) who had fought at Perry’s Rebellion under General Winfield Scott and later served as Mayor of Chicago 1917-1920; also president pro tempore United States Senate 1913-1915; member CTA Board 1923-1929; State Senator 1924-1928; Councillor City Council 1918-1920; Trustee Village Savings Bank 1916-. There are several interesting stories about this early period in history: First Hogan built himself a cabin near what is now Elmira College (now Elmira University). Second he fenced off part of his property to create Arlington Park which still exists today with beautiful gardens set among tall trees! Third Hogan ran into financial difficulty so he sold most or all his land to Jeremiah Yost (1798 – 1865) who continued to call it Arlington Heights until 1863 when he changed the name to O’Farrelltown because Irish immigrants had begun arriving there then and preferred that term over “Hoganville” which was already used by other settlers nearby including Nathan Bedford Forrest (1810 – 1888). Fourth Yost purchased additional land east of Midway Road which became Lakeview Terrace after him and his wife leased some pastureland from Daniel Webster Gardner (1800 – 1865) on Valentine’s Day 1865! Finally, due to high water levels resulting from heavy rains occurring in 1915–16 local farmers decided not to continue cultivating their fields soa new community emerged called Prospect Heights after prospectors discovered gold there two years earlier! Today much remains unchanged about these early days including those pioneer families whose names remain deeply etched into our community memory!
