O'Fallon, Illinois is a small town in the Driftless Valley of north central Illinois. It was founded in 1836 by Irishmen who had come to the area during the American Revolution. The name "O'Fallon" means "place of the apples." The first post office was established in 1837. O'Fallon's population grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching 1,500 by 1870. During the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, many residents made their escape to nearby Rockford and other towns. In 1892, O'Fallon became a city and has since continued to grow into one of the most populous communities in northcentral Illinois. The oldest inhabitant of O'Fallon is thought to be Nicholas Casey (1796-1849), an American Revolutionary War veteran who came to Illinois as part of a group led by Daniel Boone. Casey married local girl Mary Ann Ryan in 1799 and started a family that included six children: John (1802-1872), Mary (1804-1881), Nicholas (1807-1850), Anna (1809-1900), Emma (Octave) (Janvier de la Motte) and Michael Casey Jr.–the last born on July 4th., 1876. From 1800 until his death, Casey ran what is now known as "The Grist Mill", which produced flour for local merchants and also served as a stop on stagecoaches heading from Kankakee County down into southern Illinois en route to Cairo or Peoria or points east. By 1830, when European settlers began arriving in large numbers in northcentral Illinois due to waves of immigration from Ireland following British rule over Ireland, nearly all adult males living within five miles of any road were required by law to have at least one horse and two cartsone ablebodied man leading and one driving; women received no education or employment opportunities beyond caring for their families until after World War II when rural electrification increased women’s access to education outside the home without Men’s Rights Activists successfully challenging this “traditional female breadwinner role”3 although there are scattered references throughout history4 indicating that some form of domestication/land ownership may have been practiced prior to this time5; nonetheless this early depiction suggests that some men did own land within 500 feet from where they lived6arus margaritatus Agrilus marginatus L.)
