O'Fallon is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,539 at the 2010 census. O'Fallon is located in the southwest portion of the Chicago metropolitan area and is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Pleasant Prairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. O'Fallon's nickname, "The City on the Lake," comes from its location on Lisle Road between Joliet and Springfield Township. Although it has been settled by Europeans for over 200 years, O'Fallon's incorporation as a municipality took place on January 1, 1892. The name "O'Falia" (Irish Gaelic: "Uí Fáilidh") means "the good people". The first settler in what would become O’Fallon was Patrick Quinn who arrived about 1800 with his family from County Clare. He built a cabin near present day Forest Park on the north side of Lisle Road between Joliet and Springfield townships. Quinn named his community after his home county - “O’Falia” meaning “the good people” or simply “the place where I live” – an allusion to local legend which held that Saint Fáilteus visited this location before being transported to Ireland to found Cloyne Cathedral in 476 AD. In 1892 when O’Falia became a municipality it adopted the current name of its original namesake – “O’Fallon” – following ratification of an amendment to their charter providing for such change by referendum. Today, many residents continue to refer to their hometown as 'The City on the Lake', while others have moved away since becoming mayoralty-independent municipalities elsewhere within Cook County or even beyond IL boundaries into neighboring states including Michigan and Wisconsin!
