The site of present-day O'Fallon was first settled in 1836 by John Crain and his family, who named their new village after the fall of General Anthony Wayne's army at Fallen Timbers Creek on October 17 that year. The village grew rapidly because of its location near two railroads (the Chicago, Rock Island and Milwaukee Railroad and the Cairo and Quincy Railroad). By 1851, O'Fallon had become one of the most important towns in Northwest Cook County due to its position as the terminus for Union Pacific Railway passenger trains travelling between Chicago and Springfield. In 1873, John Waddell founded what would become known as Waddell's Corn Fields creamery on land now owned by the City of O’Fallon. Waddell operated his creamery until he sold it to George Peake in 1914. As part of Peake's agreement with Armour Meat Packers (now AT&T) to build telephone lines through Northwest Cook County, Waddell donated 5 acres (20 ha) of his corn fields towards this end. This acreage remains extant today as Peake Avenue which connects downtown O’Fallon with Armour Drive outside of town limits. In 1923, Jens Soeder opened Koppers Drug Mart on Winthrop Street just east of Main Street in what is now Midtown Business District #1 within walking distance from central business district located on State street across from Parkview Hospital north side facing State StREET This early development lead directly to today's high level commercial activity found throughout downtown including over 20 restaurants/cafes/bars/drug stores all within one block north side facing State Streets including 2 major department stores - Sears & Roebuck & Co., Incorporated (later Kmart) - since 1924 when it became Center mall . . .
