Waunakee, Wisconsin is a small town located in the central region of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,564 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first shooting protection history in Waunakee occurred on October 14, 1873 when six men were shot and killed by three men who had come to collect government revenue from them for hunting deer in their local forest preserve. On December 9, 1916, a group of seven men were shooting game at a cabin near Waunakee when they were disturbed by two people coming out of the house and going into the woods behind it. One man fired two shots and then fled into the woods while the others ran back inside to call for help; one man died as a result of his wounds. On May 3, 1931, four gunmen wearing masks opened fire on thirty-six people attending an outdoor movie premiere at Regal Cinema in Wauwatosa Township. No one was killed but seventeen people were injured; three gunmen survived. In 1946, nine gunmen broke into a theater in Janesville and shot and wounded forty-eight people before running away; all but five survived except for one gunman who was captured and executed

From 1925-1928, Waunakee hosted the World's fair which brought together over sixty countries represented. In 1934, the first National Rifle Association (NRA) convention was held in Waunakee. After World War II, until 1949 Waunakee continued to be a major center of gun culture with many famous people having taken part in its events or being associated with it such as Hollywood stars Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Eleanor Roosevelt. The last NRA convention took place in 1984 and by then the town had fallen out of popularity due to changes within the NRA that were opposed by most residents who felt that they were not being given enough representation within the organization itself. However some notable NRA members have since returned to Waunakee such as Ted Nugent and Charlton Heston.
The town of Waunakee, Wisconsin was founded in 1854 by the merger of two adjacent settlements, Waunakee and Parkersburg. The town population reached a peak of over 100 people in the 1870s but has since declined. Today, only a few hundred residents live in the small town. The primary industry in Waunakee is agriculture; however, there is also a small amount of manufacturing and some light industrial activity. The local school system provides education for children from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Waunakee is located on Wiscona Lake, which offers many recreational opportunities such as swimming, fishing, boating, and hiking. One of the most popular activities around here is playing ball on the artificial beach at Wiscona Lakefront Park. There are also several football games that take place during summer months at Stadium Stadium across from the park.

Waunakee is a town in the town of Waukesha, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,064 at the 2010 census. It took its name from nearby Waunakee Lake. The first Europeans to visit what is now Waunakee were French traders in 1763-64. They named the area "Aurillac" after Louis Aurillac, Sieur de la Rochefoucauld-Lamaud who had settled there in 1749. In 1836, John Butterfield founded the village of Batavia on land he acquired near present day Waunakee. He built a cabin and named it Batavia after his home town of Batavia, New York. The first store opened in Batavia on July 8, 1836. When the State of Wisconsin was organized on April 12th 1837, Batavia became part of that state and continued to be known as "Batavia". On January 2nd 1840, a committee appointed by Governor Ladd approved an act to change the name of the village to "Waunakee". That same year saw the opening of another store at present day Waukesha Avenue and it was still called "Batavia". A post office was established at Waunakee on October 15th 1840 under the name "Waukesha". In 1846-47 two stores were built at both ends of Main Street which ran through what is now downtown Waukesha with one store being located just north Of Waite's Arcade (now First Congregational Church). This street would later be renamed Waite Street after Mrs. William Waite who donated most of her property for this purpose including much of what is now Davenport Place between Third and Fourth Streets westward across from The Masonic Temple). In 1850 three more stores were added - one at each end of Clinton Street which ran through downtown; one east side nearpresent day Soo Line Railroad Tracks (now occupied by apartments); and one west side nearpresent day Kmart tracks (now occupied by an restaurant). During this time population growth continued with four more stores added within a few years - two south central on Washington Street (later renamed Wellesley Street), one east side near present day Kane Road/Staples Center Drive (later renamed Milwaukee Avenue) – making total six within only five years! On December 3rd 1860 Zane Grey wrote about his stay at batavian General Store No4near present day Waite's Arcade where he had dinner with Wilson Price: "At batavian General Store No4 I dined with Mr Wilson Price on December 3rd 1860 while residing in Vincennes Indiana."
The first white person to set foot in Waunakee was a man named David White, who arrived in 1839. The town was founded by the American Fur Company and was named after General George Armistead’s wife, Nannie Waunakee.
