Shorewood is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shorewood was organized in 1854 as a village and then became a town in 1875. The first people to live in what is now Shorewood were the Menominee Indians who lived near the mouth of the White River when Europeans first came to this area. On July 5, 1836, Ulysses S. Grant walked across the river from Green Bay to this area and called it "Milton". The name may have been derived from an Indian word meaning "place where white men could fish." He also noted that there were no woods or rivers hereabouts so he thought it must be good for farming purposes because there were only sandhills and shoals of trees along the White River. When Milwaukee was founded on April 14, 1835 by Colonel John Chisholm and his team of horsemen (the precursor to Milwaukee police department), they reached this area just south of present-day Shorewood on their way east from Waukegan. This location became known as Chisholm's Prairie because of it. General James Kapp took possession of what is now Shorewood on October 15, 1843 during his march through Door County looking for new land to settle after being driven out of Illinois by American forces under General Henry Clay Frémont. A group led by David Dudley Wright arrivedOctober 25th and built a cabin here which served as their home until they left for Racine on November 3rd with most of their supplies." On January 17th, 1850 Jeanette Rankin married Samuel Morse at Stroudsburg Methodist Church north of present-day Mount Pleasant Landing Road (present day Vernon Boulevard). Samuel Morse had come to America with his family in 1840 from Windsor England and settled in Racine before coming to Portage Terrace where he met Jeanette Rankin while working as clerk at Jno Bartlett & Son store on Butler Street near today's State Fairgrounds Driveway/National Guard Armory Lot #1 . They wed February 10th following services at Reformed Dutch church located around what is now Scherer Park Road next door to Midtown Center Mall which was then located within current-day Shorewoods limits but outside its current boundaries..they moved into what is now bedroom block C below Main Street across street from Post Office building soon after arriving in America together..a two story frame house measuring sixty feet long x thirty wide x fifteen deep with basement can still be seen today back down main street side facing Scherer Park Road opposite post office building
