Pleasant Prairie is located on the north side of Milwaukee County, between Waukesha and West Allis. It is bordered by Racine on the east, Menomonee Falls on the west, and Oak Creek to the south. Pleasant Prairie began as a farmstead just outside of present-day Pleasant Prairie. The Ladds bought land in 1855 from Nicholas Knapp for $500. They started a family farm with five cows and two pigs that year. In 1861, they sold their farm to James Hoyle for $1,000. By 1870, they had four children: John (1861-1937), Sarah (1863-1948), Edwin (1867-1951), and Minnie May (1869-1945). The Huleys also purchased another tract of land in 1865 from Nicholas Knapp for $2,000; this property became known as "The Hill". In 1875, James Hoyle married Anna Mary Burchardt; their first child was born in 1880. Anna Mary died young without any children; James married Emma Muhlenberg in 1889 and had six more children before he died in 1937. In 1895, Pleasant Prairie School District No.-3 erected its first school building which later served as home to various other districts including District No.-4 which built its current building in 1907 In 1926–27pleasant prairie received new equipment when it annexed parts of village of Waukesha
