Neenah, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1854 by merchants and railroad entrepreneurs George W. Neenah and Charles H. Goodspeed. It is named after nearby Neenah Creek. The town began as a small community on the Prairie du Chien River between present-day Neenah and Appleton. In 1857, the first store in the new town's nucleus opened; it was run by Hiram Noyes and his son John Noyes until their death in 1908. The first school was built in 1858; it was operated by private teachers until 1870 when state funding became available to build public schools in the area. In 1860, Neenah voters passed a resolution asking the Wisconsin General Assembly to create a township within Douglas County for them; this request was granted two years later. As part of that township creation process, land around what is now Neenah Creek were donated by George W. Neenah to be developed into an agricultural township under his control; this area today includes much of downtownNeenah and parts of Appleton and Stevens Point.. As more people started moving into the townships east of Neenah creek, there wasn't enough room for them all on the original square miles donated by GeorgeW., so some areas were developed but others remained undeveloped (eastern) portions of Township 2 which still include present day NEENAH proper including most of downtownNEENAH as well as Stevens Point and many other rural areas nearby...the eastern portion from NEENAH creek to where Interstate 94 crosses Johnson Rd./ US Highways 10 & 12 remain undeveloped except for some homes located just east of I-94 which are used as airport landing pads/motels etc... access roads leading from these areas into NEENAH proper have been developed such as US Highways 90 & 92 which lead south from I-94 toward downtownNEENAH while also providing access northward to eastern portions still undeveloped... overall development has created over 100 acres or nearly 3/4ths of what once comprised Township 2 with its numerous shopping centers services businesses parks churches etc...a large multi family home complex known locally simply as "The Gables" has recently been constructed on approximately one acre northeast of I-94 just outside city limits making NEENAH one big bedroom / kitchenette condo development catering mainly to upscale suburbanites rather than Main Street business people who already live close by elsewhere
