Little Chute is a town in Pepin County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. The first post office in Little Chute was established on November 15, 1873. The first settlers in Little Chute were John and Julia Purdy who came to the area from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin in 1853. They erected a log cabin on the banks of the Kettle River which became their home for over 40 years. In 1876 John and Julia's three children moved to what is now known as Illinois Avenue and started farming there with assistance from their father until he passed away in 1912. From Illinois Avenue they relocated back to Little Chute where they remained for several more decades until moving out again around 1920 when they bought a farm near Eastown Lake. In 1928 Harry Smith opened his hardware store and small grocery store called Smith's Grocery & Market at 9th Street and Wabash Avenue just east of downtown Little Chute which became one of the most popular shopping areas in town with its wide variety of items including groceries, clothing, hardware, books and other sundries. In 1954 Harry Smith died suddenly at age 83 after leaving his store unattended while he went into town to buy some candy bars for his grandson during lunchtime; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of "Little Chute's" economic decline that would continue through much of the 1960s as retail businesses closed down or switched directions due to changing consumer tastes or competition from neighboring towns such as Waukesha or Racine. During World War II littlechute produced munitions for local allies such as Japan by manufacturing thousands of pieces of ammunition per day using old barns located along White Road between Durand Road (now State Highway 11) and Lodi Road (now US Highway 12).
