Red dot sight history in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin began with the creation of a military outpost known as "Fort Atkinson" in 1854. At the time, Fort Atkinson was located on the banks of the Kankakee River and consisted of a single building, known as "The Arsenal." The Arsenal served as a training ground for Army officers and soldiers during the early days of Fort Atkinson's existence. In 1865, the United States Congress allocated land to be used for military purposes withinFort Atkinson. This new land included portions of what is now Fort Atkinson Township. The first buildings on this new property were erected at this time. The main fortification on this new site was called "The Barracks." This new fortification was designed by General James H. Rawlins and was made up of several barracks connected by an open square or paradeground. The barracks were surrounded by a stockade which functioned as a protection against enemy attack. In 1876, General Gustavus Silliman became Commanding Officer at Fort Atkinson and decided to construct a more permanent artillery installation on the site. Silliman ordered that arrow slits be cut into the top of each barracks to allow cannons to be fired from inside these structures without fear of hitting friendly troops stationed nearby. Additionally, four rifle ranges were constructed around the perimeter of The Barracks in order to provide support for artillery fire during battle scenarios. By 1890, much had changed at Fort Atkinson since it had been founded just 10 years earlier! A major expansion took place within The Barracks when Major John Fenton leased it from General Silliman and began construction of what is today known as "The Annex". This addition doubled the size of The Barracks and added eight additional rooms providing space for enlisted men and their families as well as storage areas for munitions and other supplies necessary for war-time operations. A further expansion took place in 1898 when Captain Samuel Jorgensen leased portions of Building 2 from Major Fenton and began construction work on what is now known as "The Armory". This addition increased the size again (to 24 rooms) but also introduced an entirely new typeof weapon onto Soldier's hands-namely machineguns! In 1901 Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Ebert purchased all remaining shares in The Armory from Captain Jorgensen (for $2,500) making it his own private fortress complete with its own armory complex! It would not be until World War I that significant changes would take place at Ft Atkinson; specifically within Armoury Complex 1 aka 'The Arsenal'. modifications were made to accommodate an ever increasing numberof troops both combatant/Support Units (CUSTOMERS SERVICE) AND EnlistedMen & Women who worked ASST NCOs CHRISTINE MCDONALD WILBUR& EDWARD TOWNSEND(1st COMPANY ARMORED FORCES). By 1940 Armoured Battalion Headquarters Component No 4 (later redesignated 2nd Battalion Armored Regiment), Garrison Unit No 5 & 6 quartered IN THE ARMY ORGANIZATION BUILDING ON LOT NO 3 UTTERLY REQUIRED TO SUPPORT ENLISTED MEN & WOMEN WORKING AS ASSISTants NCOsChristINE MCDONDAL WILBUR& EDWARD TOWNSEND(1ST COMPANY ARMORED FORCES).
