In 1851, Charles Augustus Marsh purchased land around present-day Mountlake Terrace from Chief Seattle. He founded Marshfield (now part of Bellevue) as an agricultural community with a post office and store in 1852. In 1865, Congress approved annexation of King County bySeattle into Puget Sound Territory; Mountlake Terrace became part of that county. In 1911, prominent real estate developer Harry Chandler bought some of Marshfield's land adjoining Mountlake Terrace and planned to create a new city called Arlington Heights on it which would be home to wealthy elites connected with Seattle's business and political worlds However, construction never started because Chandler died suddenly just before inauguration day in January 1912 of tuberculosis spread through contact with his sister-in-law who had also contracted it while living near him in Arlington Heights
