Enumclaw is a small town located in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1912 by lumbermen and ranchers named Enumclaw and Turnbull. The name originated from an Indian word meaning "a place where the sun never sets." In 1922, the first post office opened in Enumclaw with a mailing address of "Logan Lake". In 1948, the community incorporated as a village under the name of "Annapolis." The name change reflected its growing agricultural industry and increasing commercialization. The Annapolis post office closed in 1951; however, Enumclaw continued to send mail using the new name until 1974 when it became part of King County's newly created Thurston County. The last letter from Annapolis was sent on May 14th that year. Enumclaw has experienced several changes over its history including becoming a small town and then later becoming a suburb of Seattle following World War II when Boeing AG began producing airplanes there. After numerous fires ravaged through various parts of Thurston County during natural disasters such as Hurricane Wilma in 1999 and again during Storm Sandy in 2012, residents formed their own volunteer fire department which they called "Ender" after Ender’s Game author Orson Scott Card who had also donated land to help with flooding dangers following those events. On October 26th 2013, Ender’s Fire Department merged with Seattle’s “Hoodline” Volunteer Fire Department which had been struggling with financial problems for some time due to low membership dues and limited resources which led to many calls for service being refused because there were no firefighters available to respond due to staffing shortages statewide (see story). This merger made Enumclaw one of eight cities or towns across King County that have joined forces since 2000 as part of efforts known as “Community policing” or COPS ( acronym for county/town partnerships). Enumclaw was a small town in central Washington, located on the Enumclaw River. The community was founded in 1854 by John and Mary Enumclaw, who named it after their farm en route to the new state of Oregon. The Enumsclaws were among the first white settlers in what is now Washington. The town experienced modest growth until the late 1800s, when it began to rapidly grow due to its location at the intersection of trails connecting Central Washington with Oregon. In 1907, Enumclaw became an incorporated city. The population of Enumclaw peaked at over 3,000 in 1920 before slowly declining over the next few decades. By 1990, only a handful of residents remained within the boundaries of the historic town center. Today, little remains of Enumclaw except for its name which still appears on local maps and buildings dating back to after World War II. However, there are a number ofhistoric sites located within walking distance of downtown including John and Mary's farmhouse where they raised livestock and also built a home for themselves in 1896; as well as two churches - First Presbyterian Church (1854) and St James Episcopal Church (1907).
