Grant attacked Early's force near what is now called "Piney Ridge". After several hours fought off two assaults by Early’s forces with heavy losses for both sides (the first time an engagement had been fought on land since Yorktown), Union reinforcements arrived and drove Early back into his own county Later that year, in November 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House which ended the war in America
