The townsite that would become Staunton was first settled by Germans in 1828. By 1840, Englishmen had also established themselves there and named it after their patron saint, Saint Dunstan the Great. In 1847, the Ohio Company built a small fort on what would become downtown Staunton to guard against Indian attacks from the south. In 1848, General John Custer led his Seventh Cavalry Regiment through West Virginia on an expedition against Native Americans known as "Custer's Raid." Many of Custer's troopers were killed or wounded in this engagement; however, one-third of his unit - including six officers - made it back to civilization alive and returned to Fort Harrison with tales of Indian campaigns they had fought during their stay in West Virginia. This event helped make Staunton an important crossroads for settlers moving into what would become West Virginia. One significant development that took place during these early years was the arrival of locomotives onto Ulysses S Grant's railroad line in1857-58 which helped spur economic growth and innovation throughout much of central Appalachia at that time. As part of WVU's efforts to build a comprehensive online history program following its foundation in 1968 as an undergraduate research institution at WestVirginia University (WVU), I researched archives located within Downtown Staunton for this article entitled "From Settler to City: The History of Downtown Staunton, Virginias First Capital" (2018). There is no one definitive answer to this question. Staunton, Virginia is a small town in central VA that has been around since 1752. The town was named after George Washington and it was his home for many years. In 1881, the town became part ofVA and it has continued to grow since then. Today, Staunton is a busy community with a diverse population that enjoys its cultural attractions and easy access to the outdoors. In 1752, George Washington moved from nearby Alexandria to live in Staunton. He quickly became an important leader in the colony and he left much behind him- including his home and land which eventually evolved into the current city of Staunton. The early settlers of Staunton were farmers who grew crops and raised livestock. Over time, however, transportation began to become an important factor in their lives- especially as more people started moving to the area. By 1800, there were three stores in town and by 1830, there were six! The growth of Staunton led to increased trade with surrounding counties and this helped support local businesses while also creating opportunities for residents to gain experience farming or other trades outside of their homes. The first schools in Staunton were private academies run by wealthy landowners- but these eventually fell out of favor because they weren’t providing enough education for local children! In 1851, when Congress passed the Morrill Act which provided free public schooling throughout America (effective beginning 1 January 1861), many parents saw this as an opportunity to get their children closer to education so they could find better jobs after college. Accordingly, many families chose to send their children away from home for high school instead of waiting until they reached adulthood! This choice forced some adult men working on farms into towns such as Charlottesville or Lynchburg where they could no longer provide quality education for their own children- making life difficult for those adults who wanted them back home with them! Despite these challenges though, over time young people from throughout America began flowing into Staunton seeking opportunity and education – something which would continue even if/when government support was eliminated forever! In 1860 alone, over 50% of all new residents came from within Virginia – making it one of the most cosmopolitan cities in America at the time! Today’s culture is heavily influenced by generations past: There are countless historical societies located throughout downtown; Old World architecture can be seen scattered throughout; art galleries dot every inch of storefronts; restaurants offer mouthwatering meals all day long; antique shops abound;and numerous museums pepper every street corner! Staunton was founded in 1755 by Captain William Staunton and his wife, Anne. The town was named for Captain Staunton's birthplace, located in the present day town of Dunbar. At its peak, Staunton had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1812, following the War of 1812, the Treaty of Ghent ended the war and put an end to the American Revolutionary War. As a result of this treaty, most British forces in North America were pulled back to Canada. The Stauntons remained in business until their death in 1827.
