As Union forces converged on Valley Forge from all directions under Ulysses S Grant's leadership, Ewell ordered his black troops to withdraw behind enemy lines near Strasburg Heights where they were later captured after a series of engagements that cost Union casualties numbering about 5600 dead or missing compared to Confederate loss numbering only 7000 killed or wounded according to official reports
