Radford, Virginia is a small town in Loudoun County, Virginia. The population was 7,542 at the 2010 census. Radford is located on the Shenandoah River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Alexandria. The first person to settle in Radford was Captain John Smith in 1743. He founded the town on land that he and his family acquired from the Indian chief Powhatan. In 1801, Radford became part of Fairfax County and was renamed for General James H. Rawlins, who had died in 1801 at the age of 57 years old. In 1865, Radford became an important military post during the American Civil War because it lay on two key Confederate supply routes:the Appomattox Road and Winchester Way. Because of its strategic location and its ability to provide goods and transportation to Confederate forces stationed throughout Virginia, Radford quickly regained its importance after the war ended. Today, Radford continues to be a cultural center with a diverse population that includes many students from nearby universities as well as workers from surrounding businesses and counties. The town has also become home to several major events each year such as the annual Tune-in Festival which features local artists performing live music outdoors; ArtWalk; and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony which happens every December since 1978.

Radford, Virginia is a town in Pulaski County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Alexandria–Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. Radford has been an agricultural town since before the Revolutionary War and during the American Civil War it served as a Fortress of Richmond. The townsite was laid out in 1792 by General Nathanael Greene and named for Colonel John Radcliffe who had fought with Washington in the Battle of Saratoga. The first settler in what would become Radford arrived in 1793 from Northumberland County, England on a boat from Portsmouth Harbour. Colonel John Radcliffe donated land to build a courthouse and schoolhouse on what would become Main Street. A post office was established here in 1806, and soon became known as "The Friendly Village". By 1840, agriculture had replaced manufacturing as the primarystay of Radford's economy. However, during World War II RADFORD VIRGINIA BATTLEFIELD HOSPITAL (later called Walter Reed Army Medical Center) played an important role in Allied military campaigns against Nazi Germany across Europe In 1954, when Pulaski County formed its present form within Virginias new Commonwealth government under Governor Joseph Albright Jr., Radford remained unincorporated but continued to be listed among its counties within Pulaski County jurisdiction
The University of Radford was founded in 1871 as a Presbyterian college. In 1924, it became an all-women's school and has since been one of the leading women's universities in the United States. In 2001, Radford became a member of The American Association for university research.
