The first permanent settler in Poquoson was James A. Goodloe who arrived in 1802. He built a cabin on the banks of the Rappahannock River and named it "Goodloe's Landing". In 1812, John Waddell also settled here and named his land "Waddell's Station". By 1830 there were about 25 settlers living in Poquoson. In 1836, John Ransom founded the town of Mechanicsburg and named it after himself. Mechanicsburg soon became an important commercial center due to its location at the junction of four rivers: Rappahannock, Potomac, Monocacy and Yorktown Roads. Many young men from Poquoson went to work as clerks and mechanics in various mills and businesses in Mechanicsburg until 1861 when Confederate forces invaded America during the American Civil War. After the war ended, many residents moved back to Poquoson because they found new opportunities available here than in other parts of Virginia Beach or Norfolk. Businesses continued to grow throughout Reconstruction until World War II when defense requirements increased prices for goods produced outside America and Poquoson lost its status as an important commercial center. 2nd Lt George Custer was located here while serving with Company K 9th Cavalry Regiment during World War I; he is buried at Arlington National Cemetery nearby near Harry Easley Sr., another local resident who served with Company K 9th Cavalry Regiment during World War I
