The town site was first surveyed by surveyor-in-chief Thomas Dunmore in 1749 and made an official town by act of Congress on November 8, 1751 In 1871, when West Point Magnet School opened its doors for grades K-12, it served as a model for many other public schools throughout Northern Virginia until that school closed in 1978 due to budget cuts caused by growing suburban development around Loudoun County and Hampton Roads. In 1892–93 construction began on what would become known as "The Crystal Palace", now known as Freedom Hall/West Falls Elementary School; this building housed both school and government offices until 1958 when it was demolished to make way for Interstate 66 which ran through nearby Alexandria then west to Fredericktown before terminating at Herndon Hills Mall near Dulles Airport outside Manassas Junction (now completely within Loudoun County). In honor of Constitution Day (April 14th) each year since 1971 there has been an outdoor celebration featuring patriotic displays and entertainment starting early morning before traffic builds up such that park service must close down most or all roads leading into downtown where food vendors set up shop open late selling breakfast burritos etc., culminating with a fireworks display over downtown during nightfall This event usually coincides with Marvel Super Hero Day or some similar local celebration taking place outdoors elsewhere in Northern VA

In 1848, during the American Civil War, parts of Fairfax were taken over by Confederate forces and became known as "The Hoods". In 1871, all northern Hanover County except for Mechanicsville and a small piece east of Interstate 95 were combined with Arlington to form new county namedFairfax. At this time much acreage remained within Alexandria Township which formed the eastern boundary of modern-day Fairfax. Since its creation as a county, there have been many changes to how it functions and interacts with other counties in Northern Virginia. One such change came about when Arlington annexed Loudoun County in 2002. This annexation created a large geographic area that includes much more than just Arlington itself; it also encompasses portions of neighboring jurisdictions including Sterling Heights and Fredericktownships: all three counties are located on or near major commuter routes into central Virginia (I-95 and I-495). As a result, both Loudoun and Arlington Counties now enjoy significant economic development potential due to their proximity to each other as well as larger metropolitan areas across Northern Virginia.
Fayette County, named for George Washington, wasformed in 1788. The county seat was Alexandria. In 1825, Fayette County became part of Fairfax County.
