In 1814, Captain William Byrd set out from Norfolk, VA to explore and map the region that would become Virginia Beach when he discovered land east of Gloucester Point on James River he named Mount Vernon after himself and then President George Washington. In 1815, followingCaptain Byrd's discoveries, Governor Francis Fenton decided to move Fort Fredericks from Williamsburg to Mount Vernon because it would provide more security for Boston Harbor against French pirates operating from Canada shorelines across Hampton Roads. He also ordered Colonel John Cushing to begin construction of Fort Frederickricks main gateway (now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard) adjacent to Botetourt Square just northwest of present day Mission Road near King Street junction with Northampton Avenue). This event marks Virginias first inland connection with Boston Harbor since 1607 when Spanish colonists landed at Jamestown Island opposite Portsmouth Naval Shipyard ashore today’s Elizabeth City Marina - site of today’s Freedom Trail Museum! The population of Bristol was 5,000 at the time of its incorporation as a town in 1821. In 1917, Bristol became an independent city and retains that status to this day. The history of Bristol can be traced back to the early colonial days when it was part of Prince George's County. When the British colonies were surrendered to America during the American Revolution, Prince George's County reverted to British rule and it remained so until 1781 when it joined American independence. For several years after independence had been achieved, Bristol functioned as a garrison town under English control. In 1821, when Bristol became an incorporated town, it boasted a population of 5,000 residents within its walls. At that time coal mining and transportation were two important industries in rural America and many people commute into downtown for work each day. Development within the boundaries of present-day Bristol began soon after incorporation with construction commence on what is now known as the Fenton House School building which served as both municipal hall and primary cultural center for the community from 1825 through 1865. Many other buildings were erected throughout ensuing decades including churches (the First Baptist Church being built in 1827), post office (1829), first fire department (1851) and various educational institutions such as Belknap High School (founded in 1861). During World War II there was significant growth within the city limits with 2 million pounds worth of munitions produced here between 1942-1945 alone Some 620 businesses closed their doors during that period while 4500 people lost their jobs due to wartime production shortages however overall demand remained high enough to support additional employment throughout 1945 despite widespread damage caused by bombing raids conducted by Allied forces over Europe
