In February 1984, President Ronald Reagan delivered his inaugural address from Mount Vernon House inside Mt Vernon Park just outside Blacksburg City Limits; this event would become known as "The Opening" because it marked then-President Reagan's first formal appearance outside Washington D.[citation needed] The park now includes a presidential inauguration parade route starting near Mount Vernon House and ending near Arlington Cemetery just north of Interstate 95 exit 11A/9A whereupon procession returns back into town center past downtown hotels continuing along I-95 until reaching George HW Bush Presidential Library & Museum traffic circle Exit No 1 off I-95 Northbound near downtown

In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell headquartered his army at Gaines Mill before retreating through Loudoun County south to Appomattox Court House where he was defeated by Union General Jubal Early that year before ramming his artillery into Confederate lines near Cold Harbor Junction (now Frederick). After the war, many black soldiers from Fredericksburg and Suffolk County joined Ewell's army north of Petersburg in an effort to recapture Richmond; these men eventually formed the nucleus ofthe First All-African American Regiment which fought with distinction during World War II under Lieutenant Colonel James Leakey at Anzio beachhead northwest of Rome on July 8–9, 1944. In 1970s and 2000s there has been increased activity around Blacksburg due to its proximity to Defense Department facilities such as Nellis Air Force Base and Patrick Air Force Base located within easy commuting distance; this has led to an increase in nightlife and tourism among locals.
