By 1836, most of present-day Dawson County had been acquired by the Republic of Texas and renamed Pampa after General Sam Houston's older brother Major James Fenton Houston's home county west of Austin in 1836. This was despite objections from nearby Independence because they claimed all of East Texas (including much of present-day Dawson County) as part of their own county or statehood claim on October 14, 1836 when Mexico ceded its northern Mexican territory to the United States under Treaty #8 following its war with Spain over that same territory. As a result, many Texans believed that San Marcos del Rio should have been called Texoma (the original name for East Texas). A campaign to change Pampa's name began in the early 1940s and gathered support from local citizens; however, no changes were made to the town's name until 1959 when voters passed ordinance No. 283 changing it from San Marcos del Rio to Pampa after consulting with local history buffs who said that being Contentious would only alienate residents and hurt business prospects downtown where stores operated since before independenceforked Main Street northeastward across US 281 eastbound into Kansas City proper
