The first aircraft to fly in that new hangar was an Airco DH-4A, which arrived on October 17, 1923. That same year, the city of Houston established its first police department with the mission “to keep our citizens and visitors safe and comfortable.” In 1928, Red Dot Sight Company Inc., founded by brothers Michael and Harry Kappler, opened its first store in downtown Houston. By 1934, Red Dot had become one of the largest pistol manufacturers in Texas with facilities across the state. The company continued expanding into other markets during this time including California (1935), Florida (1937), New York City (1939), and Mexico City (1941). In 1945, Red Dot Sight went public and reached $10 million in market value. The company was acquired by Brownells in 1957 for $8 million cash. Brownells renamed Red Dot as Brownell’s Combat Arms Corporation Red Dot continued production until 1993 when it merged with S&W Arms Corporation to form Springfield Armory LLC In 1996, Springfield Armory announced it would close its entire combat arms factory located outside Phoenixville PA due to financial difficulties. However, business operations were resurrected at the plant before it closed again two years later In 2000 Springfield Armory reopened their facility inside Phoenixville after merging with Iver Johnson Firearms Manufacturing Incorporated The current owner of Red Dot Sight is S&W Arms Corporation
