Aberdeen, South Dakota is a town in Fremont County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 725 at the 2010 census. Aberdeen is the largest city in Fremont County. It is also the county seat of Fremont County. Aberdeen has a history dating back to 1875 when it was founded as a post office and stage stop on the Dodge Stage Line between Sioux City and Omaha. Aberdeen's first store was called "The Depot" and opened in 1875 by Wm. Copley and Bros., who located it on Main Street across from what is now the Aberdeen Middle School. In 1886, groceries were added to the store inventory and became known as The Grapes store which lasted until 1906 when it sold its assets to A&W Grocery Co.. In 1915, an oil well drilled by Standard Oil of Nebraska changed course near Aberdeen and cut off access to water supplies for many local residents so an hastily built pump station was erectednearby for use by oil companies drilling for oil in that area; this structure still stands today as part of Interstate 90 near Aberdeen Boulevard. In 1925, Consolidated Gas & Electric Company donated land east of downtown for the construction of their new power plant with initial plans to have it completed within five years but never did due to World War II gas shortages; however, work continued through 1949 despite some vandalism attempts by labor unions associated with nearby Anaconda Copper Mine (now Anadarko Mining Company). When production ceased at ANACOOPERM due to war-time restrictions on mining activities in 1945, all unfinished construction turned into trashblocks next door to Power Plant property line until finally being dismantled in 1957-58 when storage caps were removed allowing views of powerhouse operations from west side streets adjacent thereto during Daylight Saving Time! An interesting footnote about this site is that remnants of both power plant towers can still be seen from East State Avenue across I-90 just north of milepost 144:- These are two large concrete supports for what was once an asphalt roadbed used by generators during rush hours?!

In 1854, Reverend John Witherspoon organized a group of Methodist missionaries to travel from Missouri to preach Christianity to Native Americans in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. He and his followers established a school and preached Christianity to the Sioux and Cheyenne Nation before moving on into Nebraska. In 1875, Commodore George Nebeker chartered the steamer "Aurora" for transportation between Omaha, Nebraska and Pierre, South Dakota. The "Aurora" transported goods and passengers until it was sunk by fire on July 16, 1875 while en route from Pierre to Omaha. The wreck remains one of Aberdeen's most famous landmarks. The city began growing rapidly during World War I due to its location near Fort Riley Ammunition Plant (now Kansas City), which served as an important munitions production center for the war effort. The population quadrupled within two years following the end of World War I; by 1920, Aberdeen had become one of America's largest cities without annexing any surrounding towns or counties. During prohibition era Aberdeen became known as "the alcohol capital of America." After repeal of prohibition in 1933, business boomed thanks to new methods such as marketing through radio stations and movie theaters statewide that showed machine-guns being fired over downtown buildings during Prohibition fêtes while regular citizens filled Unable filling pails with beer at Paddy's Irish Pub across Main Street
