The city of Spartanburg, South Carolina was founded in 1837 by a group of Scottish settlers. The first settler, John Chalmers, arrived in 1837 and named the area Spartanburg after the ancient city of Sparta. Spartanburg grew rapidly and by 1840 it had a population of 100 people. In 1851, Spartanburg became a town and in 1865 it became a city. In 1892, the City Council voted to rename the city Spartansburg after Confederate General Robert E Lee. The name change was approved by Mayor Wirt Sargent and City Manager Tipton Burchfield. The new name made sense because during the Civil War Spartanburg served as an important military base for the Confederate army. The city's growth continued into the 20th century with rapid population growth and development. By 1960, Spartanburg had reached its present size with a population of over 250 people. Today, Spartansburg is home to several major businesses including Coca-Cola plants (Coca-Cola Bottling Company), Ford Motor Company plants (Ford Motors plant #1), Tyson Foods plants (Tyson Enterprises Inc.), NBC television networks (NBCUniversal Corp.), Rickover Naval Shipyard (#2), Clemson University (Clemson University) and many other businesses and organizations
Spartanburg was founded in 1814 by Colonel Benjamin Hawkins and Dr. James Moultrie, two of the first white men to settle in what is now South Carolina. The town slowly developed into a small cotton-growing community, but it wasn't until the late 19th century that Spartanburg began to attract industry and population. In 1886, Spartanburg became the site of the first car manufacturing plant in South Carolina when a group of businessmen erected a small factory on land donated by General John C. Breckinridge. The company employed about 100 people at its peak and produced around 50 cars per year. However, during the 1930s and 1940s, production dwindled as World War IIWDrafters moved away from car manufacture altogether due to prohibitively high prices for materials necessary to produce vehicles). By 1948, Spartanburg's economy had revived somewhat thanks to an influx of new residents who were attracted to its agricultural sector (the city has been home to some of the country's most productive farms since it was designated as a center for agriculture in 1931).
