In 1886, Secretary of War Edwin Mott granted a permit to build a military arsenal on First Street near what is now State Street. The arsenal quickly became one of the leading arms producers in Oregon City and soon became known as "The Arsenal." Over time, Northwest Gun Works (now Advanced Firearms), Inc., has become one of the most well-known firearms retailers within Portland suburbia for selling guns and ammunition products. In 1990, Northwest Gun Works relocated from its original location on NW 10th Avenue in Portland to an existing building at NE Couch Street within walking distance of many Portland businesses including MAX Light Rail Station.
