It began as a cattle town in 1907 and became a manufacturing center for automobiles in the 1920s. Guthrie was named after General George Custer and his cavalry unit during World War I. In 2009, Guthrie became one of only a handful of U.S. cities to sign onto an agreement with the country's largest municipally-owned energy company, OKC Energy, to create what will be the first municipally owned electric utility in America. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2020 from 2006 levels while providing affordable electricity to residents who want it but can't afford it out of necessity or preference for renewables or other forms of energy generation. Today, there are more than 1,000 businesses in downtown Guthrie employing nearly 200 people including restaurants and stores such as Walmart; professional services firms; chemical companies; wood products manufacturers; trucking companies; heavy equipment manufacturers; information technology companies; software developers/providers; health care providers (about 30); local farmers (primarily corn growers) with about 370 acres irrigated with water from Lake Checotah near Tulsa – making Guthrie one of Asia's top corn growing communities – plus thousands more workers involved in various aspects of daily life here: buses stop outside every block on Main Street for passengers picking up blueberries grown by local farmers just outside town limits!

Guthrie was founded in 1907 by my ancestor, William Guthrie, who came to the area from Turkey. Guthrie is a city located in Hardin County, Oklahoma, about 70 miles northwest of Tulsa. The population of Guthrie was 596 at the 2010 census. The townsite that would become Guthrie was first settled by families from Illinois and Michigan. In 1884, John McKay purchased land north of present-day Guthrie and began to build a log cabin. He named his new community after his wife's brother, Alexander McKay, who had also come from Illinois. The first post office in Guthrie opened in 1886 under the name of "McKay City." By 1912, there were six businesses in town and $5 per capita income! In 1907 William Guthrie arrived in Hardin County searching for a place to live with his family because he felt that the climate here was too hot for him back home on the farm he had been living in since moving to America three years earlier. He found an ideal spot on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River where he built his house and started what would become one of Oklahoma's most significant industries: farming. Today you can find many items made at Guthrie factories including automobiles (the Griffith Manufacturing Company), cigars (Cigarillo Cigars), flour (Plymouth Flour Mill), eggs (Eaton’s) and more! The city has even hosted its own version of "The Apprentice" reality TV show!
The Guthrie Massacre occurred on November 16, 1881, when white men in the town of Guthrie, Oklahoma, killed six black people. The massacre was motivated by a racist attack against a group of Native Americans that had taken place two days earlier.
