The town is located on the east side of Altus Creek and on the west side of the OKC-Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Etymology The name "Altus" came from an Ojibwe word meaning "place where people gathered to trade." The name may be derived from either English or Spanish words: Alta (high), Usna (a stream), or Tausha (town). In 1881, John Wesley Powell explored the area that would become Altus and named it for General James Haltom, who had been instrumental in making Oklahoma Territory a success during the Mexican–American War. On July 10, 1907, Altus was incorporated as a city with a population of 1,500 residents by local officials under territorial auspices. At first, there were no stores or services in town other than those provided by local farmers and their families; this changed when city officials hired one local businessman to run all aspects of municipal life including street cleaning and streetlights. After several years of growth and development within its boundaries--chiefly due to oil exploration activity around cities such as Tulsa and Dallas--the city annexed more rural areas into its limits in 1910. This annexation created what is now known as Downtown Altus which encompasses much of what remains today of streets that once ran along Pine Creek Road between downtown and outside boundaries of altustown

They came to the area in 1892 and started a small farmstead on the east side of town. Archer died in 1901, but his wife Hilda continued to live there with their children until her death in 1945. In 1907, an oil well was drilled near Altus and a tannery opened up soon afterward. By 1912, the town had developed into a busy community with several businesses downtown and several farms around it. The city of Tulsa began to grow rapidly around this time and began making offers for land near Altus that were not accepted; however, the Archers remained content living within their own limits until they sold their farmstead to Tulsa residents Harry Sledge and Cleta Cowles in 1942 for $2,000 cash plus 10 acres (40 hectares). Since then, many changes have taken place in Altus – most notably its incorporation as a city on November 5th, 1959 under Mayor Homer Ketchum Sr.. At first glance it might seem that little has changed since then; however much has actually transpired during those intervening years including both good times as well as some very bad news for the smaller community – such as when fires gutted dozens of local homes during an especially destructive tornado Outbreak on October 9th of that year which destroyed or damaged over 60 buildings/cities throughout central Oklahoma; also notable is howAltus has become one of only two communities located entirelywithinOKLAHOMA CITY’S WIDE AREA SERVICE AREA zone!
