At that time it consisted of only a few blocks north of where it now stands; today's downtown area comprises more than two square miles (4 km²). The original town meetinghouse still stands and is used as a museum open to the public monthly from 9am to 4pm during excluding holidays. During much of its early years Greenville limited itself to agricultural pursuits; but after transportation improvements were made available by railroads in 1853-54 and other factors such as rapid population growth combined with strong demand for goods and services generated by new industries such as manufacturing plants located near Cincinnati and Cleveland – both then newly incorporated into Ohio – Greenville began to expand rapidly into residential areas which Searles named "the metropolis". Today's downtown core contains many large commercial buildings dating back to this period including several banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., American Express Company), several theaters (the Fox Theatregreen building being particularly significant), many restaurants including Olive Garden/Pizza Hut/ delivery services (Denny's Pizza), various medical institutions providing care for residents (Hospital House Hospital) as well as numerous small businesses dotting every inch of Center Street between Fourth Street southward until just west of Fifth Street...Today there are over 1 hundred business districts or zones throughout Downtown GREENVILLE! In 1957-58 electric streetlights were installed throughout downtown following installations done at different points around Northeast Ohio under auspices spearheaded by Mayor George Kilbane with assistance from Electric Authority Commissioner John Jepsen; these lights have continued operation ever since providing increased security while also adding attractiveness to an often dark CBD

Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the east bank of the Scioto River. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Daytona metropolitan area and is the county seat of Greene County. The first Europeans to visit Greenville were French traders and missionaries, who built Fort Stedman on the river's south side in 1795. In 1811, Ohio Governor John Wyandotte named Greenville as one of his new counties, after General Wayne's Expedition into Indiana that year had destroyed most of what remained of Native American settlements in central Ohio. The town grew rapidly from its original 400 residents to 2,500 by 1830; it became an important commercial center with a large cotton gin and mill complex available for production until 1840 when it was replaced by a gristmill operated by George Stephenson’s Liverpool Cotton Mill Company. During this period too much sawmilling caused air pollution which led to city officials proposing a plan in 1849 to build a windmill which would power their mills without creating any additional pollution In 1861, when Union troops burned downtown Cincinnati during their occupation of that city following its Battle of Fort Donelson, they burned down many local businesses including several cotton gins and mills before reaching Greenville where they stopped just west of First Street (now University Avenue). A plaque beneath First Street commemorates this event and notes that "notwithstanding all hostile fire" these buildings were saved "because they could not be taken or destroyed". On July 4th 1865 Union forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House following General Robert E Lee's surrender at Petersburg Missouri; Greenville thenceforth became known as Confederate Capital City (). The post office continued operating under Confederate auspices until January 1st 1870 when it reverted back to US government control Greenville experienced rapid growth after 1865 but suffered from high levels of poverty and crime which limited development until well into the 20th century despite occasional attempts by Mayor Charles Youngblood to increase economic opportunity for citizens through such initiatives as increasing school enrollment rates or improving infrastructure such as better street lighting As recently as 1992 there were still remains extant evidence remaining from some early 21st century arson attacks targeting small businesses located near campus including one detonated inside an old munitions manufacturing plant across First Street from current UTC campus) Prioritizing environment-friendly measures has helped prevent further destruction over time However comprehensive planning forUTC has resulted in increased green space within walking distance while reducing emissions associated with dormitory operations

The town became a center of the American Revolution, and was one of the first places in the United States to be loyal to the British crown. The town experienced some significant growth during the 19th century, including an influx of new residents from England and Ireland. However, much of Greenville's early infrastructure and population had been destroyed in a fire that burned throughout much of central Ohio in 1863. This event is commemorated with a statue located at State Route 7 near downtown Greenville.
