On December 5th, 1871, General Edward Peele arrived at Newbern with 1,500 men to take possession of the town following its surrender from Confederate forces under Andrew Johnson. On January 12th, 1872, Mayor John Denton submitted a resolution asking for annexation by Charlotte; however this proposal was not accepted by Charlotte until February 25th because it did not meet certain conditions including incorporation into a municipality as well as passage of an ordinance granting voting rights to black residents. On March 8th, 1872, Governor Thomas Wentworth Higginson announced that he would not be seeking reelection in November; however he recommended that North Carolina secede from the Union on April 11th due to his belief that Reconstruction had been a failure and that white supremacy should continue unquestioned. On April 12nd, General Joseph Wheeler arrived at Newbern with 10 cannons and 1000 men to take over control of the town from Mayor Denton; however they were met with local resistance leading Wheeler to abandon the town on April 15th after losing Battle of White Point (present-day Jacksonville).
New Bern, North Carolina (formerly Elizabeth City) is a city in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina, United States. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census.
