Sleepy Hollow is a small town in upstate New York, located about an hour north of Buffalo. It was once the most northerly settlement in the area and one of the few places where Native Americans could still live unmolested. The first known inhabitants of Sleepy Hallow were the Lenape people. They arrived in 1614 from North America and built their own village on what is now downtown Sleepy Hollow. The Lenape were forced out by European settlers in the early 17th century, but they continued to live there until around 1660 when they finally left for good. European traders began arriving in Sleepy Hollow about 1600 and by 1700 it had become a trading post with connections to most of Western New York. One of these traders, Peter Kieft, was instrumental in developing the town into what it is today. He named it after his father’s home on Long Island – “Sleeping Bear” – and pushed for its development as a commercial center during his time as governor of New Netherland. In 1710, John Jacob Astor founded Elmira (now Elmira) as a stop on his long journey eastward through New England and became interested in buying land at Sleepy Hollow. He sent representatives to visit Kieft and convinced him to sell him some land at Idlewild Park near modern-day Buffalo instead because he felt that Sleepy Hollow would be ideal for expanding his business interests into this new region. The purchase was made March 1, 1711, and soon after Astor began building Astoria (now Albany) nearby on Lake Ontario as his new headquarters for his expanding empire. One important development that took place at Sleeping Bear during this time period was the arrival of firearms from Europe which gave colonists an opportunity to defend themselves against potential Indian attacks without having to rely on bows or spears. Soon after, Europeans began using handguns and rifles to take advantage of this new technology while also developing self-defense strategies such as training individuals how to shoot accurately under controlled conditions so that any incidents involving firearms can be avoided altogether. She was succeeded by her son Reverend Druschke Grosse (1898-1964) who served for many years before his retirement in 1961; during this time also saw growth in social activities such as dances and picnics which are still celebrated today at Die Kirche."
