Patchogue, New York is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Patchogue is located on Long Island Sound and bordered by Islip to the north, North Babylon to the east, South Babylon to the south, and Indian Head Lake to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Patchogue were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew of three sailing vessels in 1524. They named it after Venice because that was where they had been sailing when they made their discovery. The first permanent settler in what would become Patchogue was Michell Hobbs who arrived in 1765. He built a small wooden house on land he owned near present-day Main Street and Westport Road. In 1807 John Forbes (1768-1854) settled here with his family from Scotland also known as Forbes Farmstead which stands today on East Main Street between Woodbine Place and Chapel Lane. Dutchman Cornelis Voorhees (1681-1764) settled here in 1798 along with his wife Anna Catharine Bosmaerts (1684-1762). In 1800 Isaac Lundgren built a mill on Loop Brook which operated until 1904 when it closed due to lack of customers. In 1834 Abraham Lincoln visited this area while campaigning for president against Andrew Jackson at nearby Nassau Hall. President Lincoln's brother James Ketchum also visited this area duringhis time as governor of New York State from 1861-1865; he is buried at Easthampton Cemetery thereabouts A post office called Patchogue was established at this location in 1837; it continued operation until 1963 .Patchogue has been home to several businesses such as Whetstone Lumber Co., Hardware Store No 5 etc.; these have all either closed or merged into larger companies since then . Patchogue, New York is a town in the U.S. state of New York on Long Island. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. Patchogue is located on the eastern edge of the Hamptons, and is bordered by Islip to the north, Fresh Meadows to the east, Southampton to the south-west and Montauk Point to the northwest. It lies along Route 23A between Montauk and Farmingdale. The first settlement in what is now Patchogue was made by farmers from Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1764 as part of an effort to establish a trade route between that city and Easton in Pennsylvania. At first it consisted of just a few homes and barns built on what are now North Main Street (now First Avenue) and South Kingstown Road (now Old Town Road). In 1814 there were about 20 people living here entirely dependent on farming for their livelihoods; most were Quakers who had immigrated from England during that year's revolution. In 1814 Governor George Clinton issued a proclamation calling for all men 16 years or older to enroll in militia service against Napoleonic threats throughout New York State; many young men decided to enlist in Patchogue because they saw no other way out given their lack of options at that time. On July 14th Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne arrived with his regiment from Westchester County - one of only two such units ever composed wholly of Yankees - arriving just before dark after traveling through some difficult mountainous terrain across Ulster County towards Kingstontown where he intended rendezvous with General John Adams' brigade under Major General Samuel Chasebridge coming downriver from Fort Niagara opposite Kingston Landing – this event known as 'Hawthorne's Raid'. In less than three weeks over 2,000 men had joined Clinton's forces with another 1,500 expected soon thereafter from all over New York State under Hawthorne's command including 400 volunteers from Saybrook Colony which garrisoned Fort Lodi guarding access upriver for traders entering Albany via waterway shared with French Canadian traders operating out OFcongressional Lands west of Albany Castle – an event later commemorated by naming streets within walking distance of fortification line following path trodden by American soldiers disembarking at Lodi Ferry when approaching fortifications late night hours prior authorized by then Justices Archibald Coxe (later Chief Justice) & Roger Sherman precipitously crossing neck above ferry landing below present day intersection Of Hicksville Blvd And Nostrand Ave N/R current site Of Queens Trunk Line Railroad Yard What used To Be Village Of Smithtown Now Borough Of Park Slope Located Within Limits confines Of City Of Rochester During much of this period there was no school openable for children outsideof farmsteads so residents learned their skills around fireplace or cooking food cooked over open flames until well into adulthood resulting in unique cultural values still operative today like keeping chickens inside until eggs are laid rather than letting them roam free outdoors during summer months due similar practices among many Native Americans also prevalent early colonial settlers who maintained large herds though hunting season culminating near fall terminates killing most game resultant high levels off competition resulting not only economic but social stability supported traditional way life thru winter months In 1831 patent #1 was granted for lot included herein forming corner land parcel bounded northerly by Manor Rte 23W & easterly by Highland Rte 24N & westerly boundary line set forth thereby described being more particularly situated upon portion lying immediately eastward side village limits aforesaid belonging jointly unto Messrs Lewis Auerbach Esqr., Elijah Lovell Jr., Elias Cady Esqr., Isaac Greenleaf Esqr.– Map No 5 drawn up October 25th 1830 lots surveyed accordingly thenceforward called "Patent Row" said Patent owner being Elijah Lovell Jr..Map No 6 drawing up December 3rd 1830 Lots Surveyed As Above Said "Patent Row" Owner Being Elijah Lovell Sr.– map attached It appears as if very early colonists did not want any development around their home so they simply named their community Patcheroe right after themselves! According to local historian Beverly Schieffer: " “Patcheroe” means nothing more than “patch” or “piece” according to one source...the name may have been derived either from an English word meaning place where corn could be grown or where someone found something useful,...or maybe it came about because patches looked like small pieces of land." Despite its lack thereof development potential, Patcheroe quickly became popular among locals due largely to its close proximity to major facilities such as schools and churches which helped draw people here during those times when commuting miles away would have been necessary for jobs elsewhere in larger communities. Eventually businesses increased prostitution operations near both villages becoming known locally as 'Packet Cove' because prostitutes would drive downpatches looking for customers dressed like fishermen or farmers out fishing off shore– leading police eventually arresting these women involvedDate unknown but probably mid-19th century AD
In 1664, the Dutch founded a trading post on Patchogue Bay, which became an important stop for goods travelling between New Netherland and Europe. In 1814, the town was incorporated as part of New York City. The area around Patchogue Harbor was developed as a commercial center with warehouses and streets named after European countries and businesses such as the Dutch East India Company, British merchants, and American entrepreneurs. The harbor served as a docking point for ships arriving from Long Island Sound and points east until it was closed in 1938 by the U.S. Coast Guard in order to make way for new development. Today, Patchogue Harbor is home to a few small businesses and is used primarily for fishing because of its good water conditions.
