Ossining, New York (population: 9,000) is a small town located in Westchester County, New York. The town was founded by the Dutch in 1664 and was named for Pieter Ossiningen, an early settler. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Ossining were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1664. From here they began to trade goods with the Indians and build up their own ranching and farming abilities. In 1710, the first African American came to live in Ossining and he named his farm Emancipation Ridge after King George III's order that all slaves be freed within three years of their emancipation date. In 1836, when New York became an state, Ossining became part of it and has remained so ever since. In 1868-69, during the great American Civil War (1861- 1865), many people from Ossining took part in supplying food for Union troops on Long Island Sound under General Irvin McDowell's command. For this service they were given land east of Mount Hope Road which became known as Freedom Row because it was where supplies were delivered to troops on Long Island Sound without interruption or search by Confederate forces looking for any contraband items being brought into Yankee hands. Many veterans from this period still reside in Ossining today and are able to celebrate Veteran's Day every year at two different locations - One near downtown Ossining and another off Mount Hope Road just east of Freedom Row - both sites include displays honoring those who served our country during the Civil War era. In 1714, the area around Ossining was taken over by the Dutch. The first settler in what is now Ossining was Nicholas Hanna who built a cabin on the hill in 1720. From then until 1814, the town of Ossining was part of Albany County. In 1814, it became part of upstate New York and by 1830 had a population of about 1,500 people. The Panic of 1837 caused many businesses to close and as a result, the town lost its economic viability. However, in 1840 it regained its economic viability when an oil well was drilled there and new business began to boom. During World War II, Ossining played an important role as one of three Army Training Centers located in Upstate New York-the other two being at White Sands and Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio TX. After the war ended, Ossining continued to grow with new businesses opening up including a grocery store and hospital in the late 1960s before becoming more residential during the early 1990s when Ossining annexed Sloansville which made it another village within its borders
