Hempstead is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 9,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester– Yonkers Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first firearms were made in Hempstead by Nicholas II of Russia and his brother Ivan in 1812. There were also early gunsmiths in Hempstead including Humphrey Bogart's father-in-law John Smeaton and Samuel Morse who invented the telegraph system. In 1827, the first store in Hempstead sold guns to American settlers. The town was incorporated on October 14, 1838 and received its name from hemp (from "hēmpt", meaning "to cover"), because it had no coal or oil resources and relied instead on agriculture for income. The town developed around two churches — First Presbyterian and Second Baptist — which remain active today. Gun production increased during World War I due to demand from soldiers stationed abroad. For years after the war ended, gun manufacturers continued to produce firearms for civilian use; however, this began to change with increasing crime rates in America which led to a decrease in sales for many firearm manufacturers throughout the late 1920s through 1930s. In 1946 Hempstead voters passed an ordinance allowing concealed carry of handguns without a permit as long as someone had been training with a handgun since before January 1st of that year; this ordinance was repealed by local statute six months later due to public outcry over stricter gun control measures proposed by then Governor Nelson Rockefeller Jr.. After this repeal, pistol permits became more common among citizens but still notuniversal among all residents as required under state law; until 1998 when New York State relaxed its requirements for pistol permits again making it now easier for residents to obtain them regardless of residency status . From 1975 through 1997 there was only one store operating within the town limits - Gunfighters Armory - which closed down due to lack of business and competition from other stores within the community . On November 12th they discovered an Indian encampment consisting of more than 100 warriors including 20 war leaders who were also captured women and children. After negotiations failed to produce a surrender treaty, Schuyler burned down the village before withdrawing his troops back towards Albany that night without further incident. On January 1st 1814 during another skirmish with Indians nearpresent-dayUtica General John Armstrong orders his forces under Brigadier General James Wilkinson move forward against them under cover of darkness at gunpoint while their horses are stilleating hay off their backsides as they cross a stream bed leading up from Bear Swamp Creek where they had been positioned earlier that day according to local tradition). At 2:00am cannon fire triggers an eruption which destroys most ofthe village killing all but one man including Armstrong who escaped uninjured across nearby woods before collapsing due to wounds Received later that day at Clinton Hospital) . About 250 head of cattle were killed as well as many hogs and pigs which had been herded together into large pens outside the village proper surrounded by burning timber etc...
