East Rockaway is located in the New York City borough of Queens. It consists of a peninsula that juts into the East River, and a series of hills that run along its eastern border. The peninsula is bounded by the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood to the north, Elmhurst to the east, Midtown Manhattan to the south, and Coney Island to the west. The hills are bordered by what was once a large agricultural area called Hempstead Plains on its southern edge and by Jamaica Bay on its western edge. The peninsula was first inhabited by Native Americans who lived there for thousands of years before Europeans arrived in search of new land to settle. The first European settlers were Dutch people who came from Holland in 1624 looking for land to farm. They founded a small town named Westville on Staten Island and called it Eastburn because they wanted their settlement to be exempt from taxes levied by Dutch residents in surrounding areas. When English colonists arrived in 1664, they too set out for new land and established what became known as New Netherland on Long Island. In 1685, Englishman Nicholas Catskill settled near present-day East Rockaway and named it after his home county of Ulster County in Ireland. By 1714, East Rockaway had become an isolated community with only six or seven inhabitants living onshore and thirteen or fourteen dwelling inland due to lack of transportation options available at that time. In 1786, when John Morrell bought property along the eastern bank of Jamaica Bay from Indian traders for £500 sterling, he decided to develop it into a township under British rule. He named it after himself – Eastrockway – which means "the rock where I stood". Over time, other developers followed Morrell's lead and began developing properties around Eastrockway including Tottenville (now part of Woodside), Fresh Kills Point (now part of Corona), Garden City (now Danbury), Great Neck (now parts of Harrisonburg/Warwick) and Massapequa (currently Wantagh). When development progressed rapidly enough, local officials created roads and bridges within walking distance of each individual house so residents could get around without having to transport their goods over long distances or take boatloads of goods across open water onto shallow shores like those present today at Coney Island Basin

In 1814, East Rockaway became part of the newly formed United States of America and was named after President James K. Polk's birthplace in Ireland – east of Lough Foyle – which lay within British Crown territory at that time. The town's growth continued until 1848 when it was annexed by Bridgeport, Connecticut as part of that city's efforts to increase its population density along the eastern seaboard. When Bridgeport merged with Hartford in 1851, East Rockaway residents voted to remain separate and continue to call themselves "East Rockaways". As Bridgeport's population increased and its economy shifted towards manufacturing, the community experienced rapid decline throughout the late 19th century. In 1925, however, it regained some lost ground when it became one of the five townships within Stonington Township (now Watertown) after that township was established following an merger between two other local villages (Hudson Valley Village and North Park). During World War II, many jobs were provided by munitions plants located in neighboring Westchester County; however, due to wartime production restrictions on resources such as labor supply and housing availability in densely populated areas like East Rockaway,[1] few homes were built thereafter[2]. However, despite this lack of development during peacetime times,[3], most residents still maintain vivid memories from that time period which are reflective both physically and emotionally about life here then compared to today.[4] This chapter will focus primarily on aspects related specifically to EastRockaway’s significant role during World War II: military installations; shipping operations; economic resurgence postwar; Shoreham Lakedam Project; [and] post-WWII redevelopment
