The community was founded by John Amity on November 9, 1881 as an unincorporated community named for his wife and sister-in-law, Ann and Charles Stewart Amity. On January 3, 1922, it became a town under the name of West Amityville. On February 21, 1954, it became a village under the name of Amityville Beach. On December 12th of that year it reverted to its original name of Amityville after John Amity's death. On July 20th 1916 Alice Koren died from syphilis contracted from her husband Maximilian Koren in what is now known as the "Amityville Horror" incident; however this has been disputed by some who believe she may have died from another disease such as typhoid fever which would have caused similar symptoms
Amityville, New York is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,269 at the 2010 census. Amityville is located on the southern tip of Long Island and east of Utica. The first settlers in what is now Amityville were three Dutch families who arrived in 1624. They named their settlement "Nieuw Amsterdam". The town was originally laid out as a village by the proprietor of the land around it, Samuel Smith. On October 14, 1767, Colonel George Washington and his battalion of light dragoons came through Amityville on their way to West Point and found everything abandoned; all homes had been destroyed by Indian attacks that year. A local tavern keeper identified them as soldiers and he allowed them to stay for dinner. Some residents of Amityville moved to Utica to escape British military occupation during the American Revolution; others remained behind because they could not afford to leave. In 1812–1813 some settlers erected a stockade around what became known as "the square" or "Mansion Row", intending to prevent Native Americans from raiding their farms thereabouts. However, this fortification did nothing to deter Creek Indians from attacking settlers in retaliation for pro-independence sentiments developing among some Creek farmers living near Kingston and Uticatownships on Long Island Sound opposite Fort William Henry (later Albany) Castle; these raids led eventually to open warfare between colonists and Creek Nation proper beginning in 1814 culminating with an initial massacre of approximately 150 unarmed colonists by more than 500 Creeks at Turtle Bayou on April 12 that year under the leadership of Chief Tecumseh ( Tenskwatawa), followed by another bloody engagement at Battlefield Farms near present-day Uniontown on July 8 that same year which resulted in 3 civilian deaths among 10 militiamen killed (5 Colts lost Amongst those Killed).
