In 1951, the Department of Transportation built a new interchange at US 54 and State Road 7 near Sunland Park which made it possible for passengers to travel between New Mexico and Arizona without having to take a car ride. The town's population continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1974 when there were over 1,500 residents living in Sunland Park. However, by 1980, the population had fallen below 1,000 people and by 1990 it had decreased to 500 residents. Sunland Park is currently home to a small museum which tells the story of how the town came about and how it has changed over time. Additionally, there are several businesses located within walking distance of both the museum and downtown Sunland Park which provide services such as grocery stores, cafes/diner restaurants and pharmacies.
