In 1925, the last gun magazine location in Portales was opened at 3rd Street and US 71 near the present day police station. That year saw an increase in firearm-related fatalities due to accidents occurring while reloading handguns or using otherloaded firearms stored at home or businesses adjacent to the police station. As a result of this increased attention from law enforcement officers working within the community over firearm-related deaths statewide during that period, it became necessary for new handgun regulations adopted by the state government specifically targeting portale residents with respect to ammunition storage practices pursuant to Pueblo County Sheriff Harry Baca's Gun Regulations Act of 1926 which went into effect on January 1st 1927 The final Magazine Establishment in Portales occurred when Lenny Bruce opened his bookstore at 9th & US 41 on February 25, 1980 after previously owning several other stores throughout New Mexico including one located in Gallup

During its heyday as a commercial center, Portales also experienced some high-profile events: in 1912, Mayor John Denton drove his horse-drawn carriages through downtown streets filled with spectators to celebrate America's centennial; in 1933, President Franklin D Roosevelt visited Portales while he was on his way from Gallup to Albuquerque; and in 1947–48, Olympian Jesse Owens attended a local basketball game at Municipal Stadium while wearing American Indian gear that drew large crowds that supported him politically. A number of notable citizens have been associated with Portale including: Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer (1847–1925), composer Robert Johnson (1875–1962), actor Gene Kelly (1927–1998), congressman Tom Lantos (D-CA) (1963–2007) and business executive Don Hewitt (b 1937).
