Portales is a town in Stanton County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,628 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stanton County. The first European known to visit what is now Portales were Spanish Exploration and Missionaries in 1769-1770. A post office was established here on December 12, 1877. In 1904, two local railway companies combined to form the Santa Fe Railway which served Portales until it merged with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1968. In 1906, Portales voters approved a proposition to create a school district in the town; this led to its founding as an independent school district on February 8 of that year. On November 3, 1916 a tornado touched down near town; however no damage was done and only one person was injured (an old woman who had been herding chickens). In 1920, when New Mexico became an Arizona Territory, Portales became part of Arizona's 10th congressional District; it remained so until 1912 when it moved into territory controlled by Texas during World War I. From 1921-1927 it was within the newly created 4th Congressional District represented by William McKinley (the 25th president of the United States). A new courthouse building and annex were built here in 1927-28 and completed in 1930; all three are still standing today. In 1936-1937 construction began on what would become city hall; this project continued until 1939 when Hurricane Businessey destroyed most of downtown Phoenixville and killed dozens of people including many local officials and political leaders; this event also caused extensive property damage across much of Phoenixville as well as widespread famine throughout Stanton County due to lack of food production from agricultural residues left over from destroyed businesses etc.; all three structures still stand today as part of downtown Phoenixville's current skylinescape. On October 15mbre 1932 there occurred an EF5 tornado outbreak that damaged or destroyed more than 200 homes/buildings east sideof the village center & west sideof main street (& adjacent fields) & resulted in 2 fatalities(a preteen boy playing outside his home & his father getting out work early to help)both inside buildings:portales' first tornado! afterwards Tornados increased significantly daily for several days leading up too late afternoonOf course everyone knew about Tornado Outbreak... everywhere flags were flying ...looked like natural disaster area

Portales is a small town in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The name Portales comes from the Chia Pueblo people who called it "Tapa de Oro" meaning "Golden Fleece". The first permanent white settlers in this area were two families from Illinois, named Henniker and Marshall. These men established a trading post at what is now the corner of First and Second Streets in 1867. They soon realized that they needed to find a place where they could grow crops and build their own homes. In 1868, they founded what would become Portales on the east bank of San Pedro Creek. This site became known as Fort Henniker because it was used as a military garrison until 1886 when it reverted to civilian control under Commander John Sibley Hutchins after US forces helped defeat Spanish troops in that year's Mexican War. In 1870, Captain George Waddell moved his family from Topeka, Kansas, to Bernalillo County and began mining gold near present-day La Ciudad de México (City of Mexico). He found considerable gold nuggets but also encountered many difficulties during his journey including dangerous country roads and hostile Indians along the way In 1872 he finally reached Portales after spending weeks walking through dense jungle then crossing an open plains land filled with sandstone hillsides covered with spruce trees and other hardwood trees After finding some localoux working on his property he offered them passage back home if they would help carry water for him while he discovered more rich veins of gold About 25% of all his finds were worth over $1 million before he died years later in poverty obscurity . Despite these difficulties early pioneers did manage to create some basic structures such as log cabins or huts which can still be seen around town today Some landmarks associated with early Portales include: Fort Henniker (now part of Driscoll Park), San Pedro Creek Bridge (now across First Street), Captain George Waddell House (now part of Presbyterians United Methodist Church), Mrs. Waddells Store/Post Office building (now part of Gilderoy Blockhouse Museum complex), Mrs. Hennesseys Bakery/Livery stable (later burned down), Mr.—Pete—Hennessey house (later purchased by city government for use as office building) &Mrs.—Alice—Hennesseys store (& adjacent lot) developed between 1830-1896 For most residents one visit to Portales was enough to learn about its history & culture
