The mainstay of its economy has been agriculture since early days; however, recent growth has come from tourism (especially with visits by people seeking water recreation) as well as manufacturing and some retail usage within the local marketplaces. On February 3rd, 1860 they received 640 acres (250 hectares) including what is now downtown Los Lunas from Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla along with other grants given to ranchers and miners who had been working on the Silver King Mine at Silver King Hill since January 1st, 1859. Although many colonists perished during California’s terrible gold rush – including Many North Americans such as James Fenton (1810-1874), one of America’s earliest investors in mining – some 2200 Spaniards also descended on Nuevo Laredo in late 1850 seeking new opportunities outside Of Spain where traditional occupations such as farming offered little prospect for advancement beyond low social status quo.[1] Upon arrival they were met by harsh conditions: hot sun bake plains vast desert hostility malaria water shortages food scarcity disease[2].
