The HPL version was particularly useful for firing small arms ammunition while the ELF version was employed primarily for fire control devices on warships and aircraft carriers. In 1932, American inventor Raymond Berry patented his own GUN LASER system which he named “Raytheon Gun Lasers” after his company Raytheon Aircraft Co., Inc.. In 1938 British engineer Aubrey de Grey patented his own GUN LASER system which he named “Grey Eagle Gun Lasers” after his company De Grey Motor Corp.. These patents later became part of United States Patent 3189673 . In 1942 German scientists Siegfried Obermaier and Hamburger Ernst Ullmann developed what is now known as KNIGHTLITE TECHNOLOGY® – the world’s first practicalgun laser system – which incorporated several features from earlier designs by both Frenchmen Laplace and Berry . The KNIGHTLITE SYSTEM™ eventually became one of the most popularguns in service throughout World War II . During World War II, gun lasers saw increased usage due to their effectiveness against enemy jets Corvette/P-47 airplanes as well as anti-aircraft artillery systems such as 88mm cannons
