The first European to visit what is now Kalispell was Captain James Cook in 1778, who named it after his native city of Kallithea, Greece. In 1872, General George Armstrong Custer fought his last battle at this location before he was killed in action later that year. In 1925, Kalispell became an incorporated municipality and in 1959 it became a city under the name of Missoula. In 2000, it reverted to its original name as a result of a United States Supreme Court decision which upheld the right of cities to retain their own names even if they are not within federal boundaries. The town has several attractions including but not limited to: The Kalispell Museum District; the Butte County Courthouse; Masonic Hall; Mount Rushmore National Monument; and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land located east-central Butte County.

Kalispell is a town in Montana, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from the Kalispel River. It is part of the Eastern Time Zone and observes Central Time. The first people to live in what is now Kalispell were the Crow Indians, who arrived here about 1805. They were followed by the Hidatsa in 1836 and the Arikara in 1850. This area was first settled by fur traders and pioneers who came through here between 1847 and 1860. Over time, this area became known as " Kalispell." In 1870, it was renamed after General John A. Logan, Jr., during his campaign for Ulysses S. Grant's presidential nomination on November 3rd of that year. The town began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location at the crossroads of several wagon trails which led out into Montana Territory and Idaho Territory respectively. In 1907, when Yellowstone National Park was established, much of what is now Kalispell became part of it including most of present-day Poplarville and Northglenn counties ( excepting Whitefish). At that time many residents fled to join park visitors because there were no other places to live within easy driving distance of Yellowstone National Park! When Yellowstone opened up again for business in 1940 as a national park once again much of what is now Kalispell reverted back to private ownership with only a few parcels remaining within park boundaries until 1959 when it fell under control of the new USDA Forest Service division headquartered in Missoula via an agreement between local officials from both townships/counties escorted by firemen from Missoula while they conducted inspections throughout both townships/counties; thus preserving open space within these neighboring jurisdictions while providing employment opportunities for original inhabitants (Most notably current Mayor Phil Neuman) thereby restarting downtown commerce which had been dormant since 2007!
In 1866, the first white person to set foot in Kalispell was Captain George Michell. He and his wife, Elizabeth, came overland from the east and founded a small fur trading post on the Missouri River. The Michells were among the earliest settlers in what is now Kalispell. They built their first cabin on the banks of the river in 1868. By 1870, they had a Store and Hotel built on Main Street. In 1896, Captain Michell donated land to establish a public school district in Kalispell. That same year, he also donated $5,000 to help build Macdonald Hall at present-day US 31st Street and Hwy 8W. Because of Captain Michell's generosity, Kalispell became one of the largest towns in Montana when it was established.
