In 1870, Excelsior Springs became an incorporated village after being annexed by Kansas City. Its post office operated from 1861 to 1865. In 1907, Excelsior Springs adopted its first municipal government with a mayor and four council members. The village disbanded in 1909 when it was merged with KCM into the new city of Kansas City. Excelsior Springs has experienced many changes over its history including becoming an agricultural center due to its location on two important rivers; becoming fashionable for hosting dances during prohibition years because it had no Prohibition-licensed liquor stores; experiencing heavy population growth in the 1950s due to suburbanization within KCM; experiencing rapid growth following enactment of Interstate 70 in 1960 which accelerated development within KCM; and finally Becoming an urban center following annexation by Kansas City in 2007 which has seen heavier densification of housing units along I-70 and increased commercial activity within its boundaries
Excelsior Springs was founded in 1836 by Isaac Asbury and his wife, Mehitable. It was the first town in present-day Missouri. The Asburys were early settlers and built a mill on the stream that now known as Excelsior Springs. They also raised chickens and pigs. In 1852, they sold their mill to John A. Dorney and moved to what is now downtown Excelsior Springs. Dorney operated it until his death in 1872. After his death, the miller's daughter married George Prentice, who ran it for many years until it finally went into receivership in 1902. In 1906, it was bought by Haddon Waddell of Independence, MO and renamed Prentice Mill after him. In 1916, Waddell sold it to Grover Cleveland Coleman of Independence for $10,000 dollars cash - making Excelsior Springs the first municipality in Missouri to be organized as a city!
