Excelsior Springs, Missouri is a small town located in Clark County, Missouri. The population was 1,497 at the 2010 census. Excelsior Springs is part of the Springfield-Harrison Metropolitan Statistical Area. Excelsior Springs began as a small log settlement on the east bank of the Ohio River in 1837. It became a community after it was purchased by General George Washington Harris in 1846 from his brother-in-law, James W. Fenton for $1,000. The name “Excelsior” came from an old Indian word meaning "grandfather's house." The first store opened in Excelsior Springs in 1851 and was operated by J.W. Fenton and his son John W., Jr.. In 1865, one of Excelsior Springs' two sawmills closed down and its owners Argus Parnell and Levi Ladd decided to move their business to Kansas City because they could get better prices for lumber there. However, when they returned to Missouri they reopened the mill at Excelsior Springs but with much lower prices because of competition from other mills in that state. In 1865, another store opened in town called Ingraham & Company which specialized in groceries and flour; it was run by John Ingraham until he moved away to start his own grocery store years later also located downtown (now known as Barnes & Noble). After several failed attempts to sell alcohol without a license from the government through local merchants, finally successful sales were made on May 20th 1898 when Mayor Sibley applied for authority to sell alcoholic beverages within city limits under the laws of Illinois; this event is considered the beginning of what would become municipal drinking prohibition in Missouri! The post office opened at Excelsior Springs on October 7th 1852 under name “Stroudsburg” due to its location on State Road 6 about four miles west of town center along US Highway 34 corridor then being connected with Hennepin County Roads 2 & 3 form Corinthia before terminating at Mound City Road near present day Stroudsburg Municipal Airport just south of I- Jennings Boulevard exit off I- Jennings Boulevard! On November 15th 1861 United States Post Office changed its name back to “Excelsior” following an act of Congress which renamed all U.S post offices pursuant to section 301(a)of Title 31 Ulysses S Grant Act June 12th 1865 (26 Stat 515). This legislation increased public awareness or notice given greater distances between cities/townships so all mail passing through those areas must bear an official designation such as "Outer bound for Springfield", "Inner bound for Harrisonburg", etc... Consequently every mail vehicle moving thru any Eastern American city bearing this notation received cheers from locals populace! In fact many people still refer today TO ANY POST OFFICE WITH A 'EXCELSIOR SPRINGS' IN ITS NAME - even if THAT POST OFFICE DOESN'St EXIST ANYMORE... As long as you're driving thru our beautiful rural community you're guaranteed some smile or laugh out loud interaction ;) grandmother used To say 'If I only had three teeth left I'd put them into my excellosirs springs toothpaste!' ha ha
