Cape Girardeau, Mo., is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County. The name "Cape Girardeau" comes from French for "headland". The first European to visit the area was captain Jean René Marquette in 1804. He named the river Espiritu Santo after Blessed Assunta of Savoy who had died in 1784. In 1836, General James Sully established Fort Benton on what is now Cape Girardeau's Main Street and named it for General George Washington's old friend and mentor, Marquette. In 1840-41, settlers arrived from Illinois and Indiana who founded the town of Saint Joseph which grew up around I-55 and State Route 64 (now US 40). On November 15th 1840, Saint Joseph was incorporated as a city by ordinance of the territorial legislature; it became one of the counties within Missouri when that state was organized on January 3rd 1861.
