The first cannons were made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and named the “Providence” after the ship that carried them across the ocean. The cannons were used to protect the town from Indian attack. Gunsmiths began making pistols and rifles in 1838. Rifle makers in Cape Girardeau produced some of the most famous weapons of World War II, including the M1 Garand rifle and the P-51 Mustang fighter plane. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in gun ownership among residents of Cape Girardeau. In 1846, two men by the names of Hiram Maximand Auguste Pierre founded what would become known as Arsenal Arms Company on State Street between Third and Fourth Streets in downtown Cape Girardeau. The company manufactured pistols, rifles, shotguns and other weapon parts until 1865 when it merged with another firearm manufacturer called Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester & Norma Incorporated In 1855-1856, another firearm maker named Llewellyn & Ferguson produced revolvers for the Confederate army during the American Civil War under contract from Confederate General Robert E Lee In 1870-1871, Cannon Manufacturing Company produced revolvers under license from Colt
Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County. It is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Cape Girardeau County was Gideon Barnes in 1819. In 1837, Daniel Webster founded Webster's Mills here and this became the largest flour mill in America until it closed in 1865. A post office called "Girard" was established in 1837, and became an important center for trade with surrounding counties. By 1860, there were over 20 businesses operating here including a hotel, blacksmith shop and several stores catering to farmers and others within driving distance of its mills. The town also developed into a commercial center with multiple theaters and other businesses that attracted people from throughout the region for social events and commerce. In 1862, during the American Civil War, General John Jumper surrendered at Fort Donelson after his army was surrounded by Confederate forces on April 9th (the day following D-Day). As a result of this surrendering event which took place near present-day Girard Heights neighborhood on the city's east side (near where Interstate 64 now intersects), General Robert Eager ordered all buildings insideFort Donelson except those used as military barracks be burned down so that no evidence could be left behind should Union forces eventually regain control over that location later on in the war. This order led towww much speculation as to who actually owns these buildings today - most likely because they are still unused but still considered government property by law enforcement officials within Cape Girardeau County today! On October 3rd 1870 (just prior to Kansas becoming a state), another significant event happened when residents of nearby Decatur voted unanimously to secede from Missouri and form their own state called Kansas Territory; this decision marked one of the first steps towards creating separate states within America! On February 14th 1871 (two days after Kansas' admission into America via Congress), President Ulysses S Grant issued Executive Order 10355 allowing for voting ballots cast by citizens resident within Kansas Territory toward joining that new country as well! This occurred just weeks before Native American attacks against settlers living near Wichita River led to intense military action known as The Great Wichita War which ensued across much of southwest Kansas between November 16th – December 2nd 1870!
