Yazoo City is a small city in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,740 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Yazoo River and is part of the Greater Jackson metropolitan area. The town was founded by General Andrew Johnson in 1836 as an agricultural community named for his ancestor, Colonel John Chilton. After being burned by Federal troops in 1837, the town was rebuilt and renamed Yazoo City in 1838 after Samuel Fenton Yarborough, a settler from Georgia who had come to Mississippi to trade with Indians and purchase land. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Yazoo City became a key Confederate military base due to its location on the Scioto–Ouachita River south of Corinth. On April 12, 1865, Union forces attacked and destroyed Yazoo City; it was one of several Mississippian cities destroyed during Union General Sherman's march through Mississippi that summer. In 1865-1868 Yazoo City served as headquarters for General John Cinthia Forrest's cavalry unit as he fought northward against Ulysses S. Grant's army before finally surrendering at Appomattox Court House on April 9th of that year. That same year also saw Yazoo City become home to the first African American schoolteacher in America when Ebony Elizabeth White enrolls at Colored Female School No 806 located downtown (now known as Morehouse College). In 1968-1969 Yazoo City experienced significant racial unrest followingfailure of white flight from rioting black students who had taken up residence in abandoned buildings throughout the city limits Today much of what once characterized central business district (CBD) scene around Main Street has been replaced by modern office towers or other highrise buildings housing professional services such as health care and law firms while few if any vestiges remain remaining evidence of original structure or characterestablishing centerpiece street grid which once functioned both commercial arterya important link between rural communities surrounding central business districtand commercial zone within city limits Additionally some Georgian Revival Style structures have been converted into contemporary residences while others are still utilized for various governmental functions including courthouse/judiciary complex etc
