The town was founded by Methodists who migrated from Tennessee and built a Baptist church in what is now Olive Branch. In 1836, the first African American gunsmith in America opened his shop in Olive Branch. It was here that Julius C. Grady began making rifles for white settlers in what is today Ole Miss. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered Grady’s rifle company to surrender because they were not breaking Union arms law; this led to the Battle of Olive Branch which ended with Confederate loss of many soldiers and civilians. The town quickly became known as "the center of firearm production in Mississippi" and businesses such as Grady’s continued to be operations until after World War II when guns moved away from the area due to discriminatory policies by the federal government (see Second Amendment). Today, Olive Branch remains a small farming community with a few hundred residents according to 2010 census estimates while its historically significant firearms industry has largely been buried under other endeavors such as post-war reconstruction and tourism development since then.
Olive Branch is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,342 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Olive Branch was James Hogg in 1818. A post office and store were established there in 1821, and a school was started in 1827. A sawmill was built by John Sennett near Olive Branch in 1830; it stopped operations around 1840. In 1846, a group of Methodist ministers founded the Olive Branch Church of Christ on land that they had acquired from Nathaniel Banks Sr., who had purchased it from Colonel John Cochran for $2,000+. In 1865, a millrace ran through Olive Branch and private wells provided water to the townspeople; this system continued until 1902 when the Mississippi Central Railroad came through and connected with Mobile Bayou at San Jacinto Falls. A grain elevator was built by Sennett around 1901 to process local corn. With World War I looming large and food production reaching new heights across America, mills closed throughout Mississippi due to an abundance of available supplies (and competition from imports). By 1921, only one mill remained open – the Cottonseed Mill – which continued to operate until its closure in 1975. One early resident of Olive Branch was Elijah Bogue (1814-92), who served as mayor of Jackson from 1880-84 and as Ulysses S Grant's personal doctor during his presidency (1865-69). Others associated with early days of Olive Branch include Absalom Woodson (1796-1868) and Daniel Webster (1797-1946). Woodson became president pro tempore of the United States House of Representatives after being elected as a Democrat to fill out Jeff Johnson's term as speaker; he later lost reelection but served two terms as governor before retiring in 1881. Webster attended Yale College where he met future President James Kenedy while classmates; they married on December 14th, 1797 while Webster still attending Yale University.–Dane Murchison
