Laurel, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. Laurel is located on the south side of Jackson County and is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. It is home to two high schools and one elementary school. The town was founded in 1824 by James Hardin and his family. In 1828, it was named for General John Laurens who had died in battle earlier that year. In 1840, the townsite was sold to Captain Nathaniel Parker from Greenville and his family. Captain Parkers son, James Aiken Parker donated land to the town for a public square, which he called Parkers Square. The first post office in Laurel opened in 1851. The first store opened in 1865 under the name of J & P Smith's Store. In 1870, Fenton Waddell started an oil well near today's intersection of US 90/20 and US 96/30A (now I-55). By 1880, Laurel had three hotels: The Hotel de Ville (1881), The Commercial Hotel (1882), and The Belle Epoque (1883). In 1897–98, local farmers formed a cooperative known as "The Farmers' National Bank." Membership included all farmers within one mile of any bank or other financial institution; this allowed them to borrow money without fear of being turned down for loans by others in their community because they did not have such a bank account. On November 15th 1898 during an election held to select trustees for what would become Meridian School District #2 consolidation into Meridian School District #1 due to budget cuts by then Superintendent Drayton McMillan - incumbent voters elected Acting Superintendent Alfred Burchfield - with 79% participation rate over McMillan's 20%. This event marked the beginning of Laurel's long history as a thriving community with diverse economic interests that has benefited from its location withinJackson County
The first white settler in Laurel, Mississippi was George Washington Carver. He arrived in 1882 and started a farm. In 1907, the town of Laurel was founded by Reverend P.F.Hagan and James Hagan with the goal of developing it into a small town with good roads and businesses. The first post office opened in 1909, and the first store was built in 1912.
